A friend of mine recently went somewhere else to get her hair cut. That fact alone doesn't bother me so much. I believe everyone should go where they want to go for their beauty services. I never want my friends to feel obligated to come to me for their beauty needs...especially if they feel loyal to another stylist!
My friend had never been to the salon she ended up going to before. It turns out, my friend just didn't know I would cut her hair for free if it was for Locks of Love. I couldn't really fault her for not knowing as I had not made it known! So, here I am, telling everyone that I gladly offer my services for free for a worthy cause.
If you have grown your hair out according to the guidelines set by Locks of Love, I will gladly cut it for you, free of charge! I find total transformations especially rewarding as a stylist. Anyone who has invested years in growing out their hair for the benefit of others deserves a new 'do. I'll even fill out the paperwork and send the hair in for you.
This year was my first year participating in Movember. I found out about it about a week before the November 1 "shave off." My sweet friend, Jen helped me draft a press release indicating that we would be shaving mustaches for free, in support of Prostate and Testicular Cancer Awareness. Jen also made adorable mustache cookies for the event! In addition to offering to shave "Mo Bros," I offered free facial hair waxing services to "Mo Sistas (the women who support the Mo Bros) that day. Donations were made and hopefully awareness was raised. When a man who has sported a 'stache for over 20 years shaves it off, people are bound to ask questions! It gave these guys a good opportunity to talk up preventive care to their buddies. If they chose to regrow their mustache with a new design, that gives even more chances to open up the lines of communication!
Jen has tried tirelessly the last few years to get a salon in town to participate in Pink Hair for Hope. Every year it is a struggle to get salons to respond to her. I got back into the salon scene a little too late to get involved this year. I hope to be a Pink Hair for Hope salon next year! If that doesn't happen, we will still do some version of it, be it dying stands pink, or offering clip-on extensions.
These are just a few ways that Studio nine Salon gives back.
